The glassmakers moved the industry from Venice to Murano in the late 13th century. Some claim this was in order to protect the city of Venice from the risk of fire caused by the glassmaking furnaces, but others believe it was in order to preserve the secrets of Venetian glassmaking and prevent the trade knowledge being acquired by foreigners.
